If you’re looking for high quality windows with excellent efficiency, triple glazing is the premium choice. Using the same technology as double glazing, with a gap of dense gas between panes of glass, triple glazing is made up of three panes and two gaps for an extra layer of insulation.
The dense gas (we use Argon) acts as a buffer to prevent heat and sound travelling through the window. With two layers of gas, triple glazing is that little bit more efficient at retaining heat and reducing noise from the outside world.
While double glazing is often enough for most houses in Britain, triple glazing is popular in colder climates, like Norway and Sweden, for its ability to retain heat. It is also commonly used in areas where there is more outside noise, such as windows that face a busy road, as triple glazing can significantly reduce noise pollution.

Does triple glazing make a difference?
Triple glazing is undoubtedly more insulative than double glazing, and especially single glazing, but don’t just take our word for it. Taking into consideration the U-value, we can evaluate each material for efficiency. The U-value measures the amount of heat lost within a material, so the lower the U-value, the less heat is lost. For example, a brick wall has a U-value of 2.0, whereas a double glazed window’s U-value is 1.2, and a triple glazed window is just 0.6. At half the U-value of double glazing, you can see that triple glazing is objectively more efficient than double glazing. If you need triple glazing, it will be an investment that saves you money on your heating costs and gives you a house that is quieter and less draughty.
Is it worth replacing double glazing for triple glazing?
Triple glazing is a great investment that not only increases your home’s energy efficiency, but also its value. Triple glazing is more common in areas where the winters see a harsh drop in temperature and strong winds, as they can protect better against draughts and maintain heat within the home. It can also be useful if you experience a lot of noise outside your property, as triple glazing reduces noise pollution from nearby busy roads. If neither of these apply to you and you have newly installed double glazing, you may find this is enough for your home.
How long does triple glazing last?
The longevity of triple glazing all depends on the climate you live in and the care and upkeep you put into your windows. At Adorn, our windows come with a 10-year guarantee, meaning any faults within that time can be repaired or your windows can be replaced. With the proper care, however, your windows should last much longer. A well-maintained window can last 20-30 years before the insulative properties are affected. Keep your windows and frames free of dirt and grit, and give them a simple wipe down periodically. Check out our repairs and maintenance page for more information on window care.
What is the difference between double and triple glazing?
Double and triple glazing both use the same technology, trapping a dense gas between panes of glass. The difference between double and triple glazing is that double glazing involves two panes whilst triple glazing uses three panes. Three panes of glass means that there are two gaps filled with Argon gas in triple glazed windows, which significantly increases the insulating properties of the window.
