Combine traditional charm with modern style with our sliding sash windows. This window style has been popular for centuries, but older versions were often made of single glazing and a timber frame that lacked in performance and efficiency. Our up-to-date versions deliver all of the appeal with none of the drawbacks.
Our modern solutions mean no more chilly draughts or rattling frames, but smooth openings and efficient heat insulation. The two window panes are tilted slightly inwards for proper ventilation and easy accessibility for cleaning, and are also suited for conservation properties.
Sash windows are made up of two window panes, one of which glides open vertically to provide good air circulation. Their aesthetic has an old-world charm that is often suited to cottages or more traditional properties, although they can complement almost any home.

Are uPVC sash windows any good?
uPVC may have had a less than desirable stereotype in the past as a cheap material, but with modern advances it has become a popular choice for its durability and versatility. uPVC is ideal for those on a budget as it delivers on quality and can replicate a traditional timber frame sash window.
Not only can uPVC look identical to traditional wood frames, but they are much easier to maintain, with minimal cleaning needed, less build-up of dirt and grime, and no requirement for extra painting. These cost-efficient windows have maximum appeal and minimum drawbacks.
How do you measure a sash window?
To measure the width of a sash window, take the measurement across from one side of the window to the other, excluding the box that the window sits inside.
To measure the height of a sash window, measure from the top to the bottom of the windows, making sure to include both sashes. Take this measurement inside the box frame.
The box frame height and box frame width is the measurement of the entire window frame, top to bottom, and side to side respectively.

Are uPVC or aluminium windows better?
This depends on your preference and budget. uPVC is a cost-effective material that is highly durable and versatile, providing good insulation and longevity. uPVC sash windows require minimal maintenance and are very easy to clean.
If you’re looking for a higher-end product, aluminium sash windows are more expensive than uPVC but provide an extremely robust material. Aluminium is stronger than uPVC, meaning your sash windows can feature smaller frames and sashes with a greater glass surface area. This is an ideal option if you want to allow maximum light into your home, or enjoy a more unobstructed view of the outdoors.
Can sash windows be double glazed?
Most of our windows come with double glazing as standard, but you can also opt to upgrade to triple glazing if you are looking for extra noise reduction or insulation. Double glazing is our recommended option as it is a great heat insulator that keeps the cold air out and the warm air in, reducing your heating bills, and keeping you toasty. Triple glazing can be preferred for street-facing windows where you may want to block out extra noise. Our uPVC sash windows are a fantastic cost-effective option that means you can choose to go with double glazing while keeping the installation at a reasonable price.
How does a window sash work?
A sash window is made up of two or more panels, where at least one panel can move vertically up or down. For a single hung sash window, one panel is fixed in place while the other moves, and double hung sash windows allow for both panels to move for maximum airflow.
Sash windows operate on a pulley system, meaning that when you slide open one of the panels, it stays in place without falling back. This means you can be sure your fingers are safe when using them!
Which part of the window is the sash?
Sash windows are generally made up of two sashes, which are sections of the window that hold the glass panes together within the frame. Depending on the type you opt for, sash windows have either one or two moving sashes.
While sash windows are a perfect option to combine traditional style and modern usage, they function best when installed and maintained properly. Check out our maintenance page to get the most out of your sash windows and prevent draughty, less effective windows.
