Orangeries

An orangery is a stylish addition to any home, reflecting an era of grace and glamour. In years gone by, orangeries were a practical garden building for the wealthy to grow exotic shrubs and trees.
Today an orangery is a classy home extension, combining style and practicality seamlessly. An orangery is very similar in design and function to a conservatory, but with a few marked differences. An orangery has a more solid construction than a conservatory due to the dwarf walls that run around the edge of the building. However, you will not lose any light as the rest of the roof is made of large glass panels.
Being more durable than a conservatory and less expensive than an extension, an orangery is a great way to add much-needed space to your home. Not only this, but an expertly designed orangery will also add value to your property due to its practicality and aesthetic appeal.

Common Questions
What is an orangery?
An orangery is very similar to a conservatory but has a more solid construction. Traditionally, there are dwarf walls and pillars running around the outside. The roof is solid with either Glass Pods or a lantern built into the structure. The rest of the walls and central part of the ceiling are made from glass. Orangeries were once status symbols, but are now an accessible way to let more light and warmth into your property.
What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
A conservatory is generally made entirely of glass, letting light in through the doors, windows and roof. An orangery lets in slightly less light as it has a more solid construction, making it more like an extension in this respect. This means that the orangery is fantastic at staying cool in summer and warm in winter, creating a more year-round space. A conservatory is useful as a multi-functional space between your house and garden. Which you should choose comes down to personal preference.
Is an orangery warmer than a conservatory?
Due to the smaller proportion of glass, an orangery is usually warmer than a conservatory. The solid materials used in its construction also make it effective at retaining heat in the winter. Nevertheless, energy efficiency also depends on the quality of the materials used, as a double glazed conservatory will be warmer than a single glazed orangery. At Adorn, all of our products are made with high-performing double glazing to help you keep your home as thermally efficient as possible.
Is an orangery cheaper than an extension?
Although an orangery is more expensive than a new conservatory, it is cheaper than a full extension. If you want to create a bright, open space in your house to enjoy your garden then an orangery is a great option.
