What is the difference between French windows and French doors?
French windows and French doors are both designed in a similar way with two panes of glass opening outwards, but their locking systems and handles are different due to their size. While French windows can be used as a fire escape on a ground floor, French doors are fully functioning doors that you can walk through and therefore require different levels of security.
The biggest difference is the size. French doors are usually floor to ceiling in length and are taller and thinner. French doors and windows both have two side-hung sashes with a middle opening and no obstruction in the middle, although the sashes on French doors are much thicker.
French doors are ideal for opening out onto a patio or garden area, whereas French windows can be used on any level of the house to increase air circulation and give you wide views of the area.
Are French windows secure?
You can rely on the quality and security of Adorn Windows glass, which are all approved by the Police Force’s Secured by Design scheme. This glass is used in the manufacture of our French windows, making them just as secure as our many other window types. Our French windows use locking shoot-bolts, three-point locking systems, and secure hinges, as well as thermally toughened glass for windows installed on the ground floor. During installation, our expert staff will thoroughly demonstrate the use of your new windows so you can feel completely comfortable and secure in their use.
What are the advantages of French Windows?
One of the best features of French windows is their ability to give you an unobstructed view of the outdoors, as there is no middle pillar in the frame. They have a distinctly European feel and are particularly valuable if your outdoor views are ones you want to enjoy. French windows are also practical as an easy way to ventilate your home. They provide a light breeze in warmer months, as well as significantly more light, and can be used as an emergency fire escape on a ground floor.
Why are French windows called French windows?
The idea behind French windows dates back to the Renaissance era in the 17th century, where light was a key concept within art and architecture. In order to introduce more light into living spaces, more glass was used in windows. The trend then carried over to France where it was developed into large windows that could be opened like doors as a way to access balconies during the summer. Becoming popular across Western Europe, it became a staple window and door design for those wanting an easy way to admit light and air into their homes.
Do French windows swing in or out?
Although French windows usually open outwards, you can choose which way you’d prefer. This choice depends on accessibility for cleaning and what type of curtains you have, as inward opening windows may not be feasible with heavy curtains.
Outward opening windows, however, do not intrude on your indoor space, and are equipped with an anti-slam feature, meaning a sudden burst of wind will not cause damage to the window frame. You’re less likely to have to deal with dirt and debris with outward-facing windows, which will not bring anything into your home and may be the better decision.
Can French windows be used as a fire escape?
Under UK government-authorised scheme FENSA, a fire escape window must provide 0.3m² of unobstructed space, which French windows — provided they are large enough — adhere to. For upper floors, each room is required to be fitted with fire escape windows that aren’t more than 4.5 metres from the ground, which is generally true for first floors in the UK.
