French Doors

  • French doors are a charming and easy way to add light, space, and effortless European style to your home. A common addition to the rear of a property, they provide easy access to your garden and property. Open up your home to the outdoors with French doors that will maximise your space and provide breezy circulation all year round.

At Adorn Windows, we manufacture our products at our own workshop to ensure we are providing you with the highest quality doors and windows. We will create your French doors according to your design preferences, using only the best materials.

French doors have come a long way in their design, and while originally created to swing open with ease, they now come with built-in restrictors, so you can leave them ajar without worrying about them blowing open or shut. They are highly functional for access to a conservatory, patio, or garden, and a great way to enjoy your garden from the inside, no matter the weather.

Are French doors always double?

While French doors are installed in a single frame, they are always made up of two doors. This means that when both doors are open, there is no pillar in the middle and you have unobstructed access to your outdoor space. This is ideal for summer months when you might want to bring your table and chairs outside.

Although our French doors are double, you can choose for one of the doors to remain closed and locked most of the time — this is a good idea if you want to keep the warmth in during the colder months. You can still have easy access to the outside and ventilate your home without having to open both doors.

What’s the difference between patio doors and French doors?

Patio doors are usually sliding doors made up of two panels, one fixed, and one moving. They are ideal for homes with less space, and provide just as much light and ventilation as French doors. French doors open as normal, but there are two doors within one frame, with no pillar separating the two. Both doors are great options for light, air circulation, and garden access, so the choice between them depends on your home and personal preference.

Do French doors swing in or out?

This is your choice! Depending on your space and preference, you can opt for either inward or outward opening doors. If you are wanting to open up your property or don’t have much indoor space, an outward opening might be best for you. On the other hand, if you have an outdoor area arranged with plant pots or other decor, inward-opening doors could work better. Get in touch today and we can chat over your options.

Why is it called a French door?

As you may have guessed, French doors originated in France, although their history is a little more complicated. Their creation was heavily influenced by Greek and Italian design during the Renaissance era as a way of allowing maximum natural light into homes. They were subsequently honed in France, where they were put to practical use as doors to access balconies. Since then, the design has taken off, and they remain a timeless and undoubtedly European fixture, providing style and function all in one.

Do I need planning permission for French doors?

If you are installing French doors at the rear of your property, you don’t need planning permission whether you’re replacing your doors or creating a space for completely new ones. If, however, your French doors are facing a road, we recommend you enquire about getting permission. This is likely to be especially important if you live in a listed or period building, in which case there will be certain regulations to adhere to. For more information, contact us for a chat.

Do French doors increase home value?

If you are upgrading from a standard door to a French door that leads directly to your garden, then yes, they can add value to your home. Not only do French doors increase the natural light inside your home, they can also add the illusion of space, open up the entire room, and provide a beautiful view of your garden.

On top of that, at Adorn Windows, we only use the highest quality materials to create our products, ensuring that your upgrade will have the added benefits of good heat insulation and high security for yourself and any new homeowners.

Energy saving is incredibly important and so is keeping your fuel bills down. We are continuously looking for ways to make our projects energy efficient and one way is to choose new PVCu windows and doors. Not only will they help to keep your project warmer, they will reduce your energy loss.

Don’t just take our word for it!

Our suppliers conform to strictly controlled and independently monitored Quality Management Systems such as ISO 9001, to ensure that everything is done correctly and according to best practise.

Our windows are tested independently by British Standards for security, weather tightness and strength performance. This means that periodically, we have to send them to independent test houses, in order to be tested to destruction.

These are just some of the many standards the products in our vast range conform to. Needless to say we take the quality of our products very seriously indeed.
