Double glazing is a practical and budget-friendly way to reduce heat loss and increase your home’s energy efficiency. It can also be useful for street-facing windows to reduce noise pollution from a busy road.
A double glazed window is made up of two separate panes of glass within one window frame. In between the panes is a small layer filled with Argon gas, which, due to its density, works as an insulator. This means the warm air inside the house stays put and the cold air outside can’t come in. Condensation is also significantly reduced.
Proper glazing and insulation not only decreases your home bills but increases your home value. Our windows come with double glazing as standard, as well as excellent energy saving ratings. However, if you want to reduce your energy bills even further, upgrade to Super Energy Efficient glazing or triple glazing.
Enjoy added security with thicker window frames and durable double glass panels that are harder to break into. Our thermally toughened glass and high security hinges give you that added secure feeling that your home is well protected.

Is it worth replacing double glazing?
Double glazing has a durability that can last up to 30 years if well maintained, although you may notice decreasing efficiency before this. The Argon gas between the panes diminishes over time reducing the window’s sound and heat insulating properties, so consider replacing your windows if they’re not performing as they should.
Replacing your windows with Adorn double glazing windows will make a noticeable difference. Our professional installation experts will ensure your new windows are properly installed to provide you with draught-proof, highly insulative double glazing to keep you warm and reduce your heating bills.
Does double glazing reduce condensation?
Yes! If you currently have single glazing in your house, you are probably all too familiar with condensation, the result of warm inside air hitting the cold air of the windowpane and forming droplets. This is because single glazing is made up of only one pane of glass, so is not efficient at keeping cold air out and can be cold to the touch.
Double glazing is made up of two panes of glass separated by a space filled with dense gas to block air getting in or out. This stops the transfer of heat, meaning the interior pane remains warm or the same temperature as your home, and no drops of condensation will form.
Sometimes you may see condensation on the exterior glass when the weather is cold outside, although this is nothing to worry about and will clear when the temperature rises. In rooms with poor ventilation or without heat, you may see small amounts of condensation.
What is double glazing?
Double glazing is made up of two separate panes of glass joined together in the window frame and a thin layer of Argon gas between them. This gas is in a 20mm gap between the glass panes and as it is denser than air, you get better noise reduction and thermal insulation.
If you’re upgrading from single to double glazing, you’ll notice a significant reduction in your heating bills. Not only does double glazing keep in the heat, it also stops cold air from coming inside, and virtually eliminates condensation.
What is the best gap for double glazing?
The gap between the two panes of glass is how double glazing functions, as it is filled with a dense gas like Argon. This gas works as a buffer to prevent noise and cold air travelling through the glass from outside.
The size of the gap can vary between different double glazing, but we have found that a 20mm gap within a 28mm thick unit provides the best efficiency. This means less money spent on your heating bills and less wasted energy.
Does double glazing reduce noise?
Yes! While single glazing is less able to stop the travel of sound waves through the glass, double glazing is made up of two panes of glass, separated by a gap that is filled with Argon gas. As Argon is denser than air, it is more difficult for sound to travel through, creating a buffer that significantly reduces noise from outside your window. Double glazing is particularly useful for windows that face a main road, and we offer special laminated Stadip Silence windows, which provide efficient sound insulation without needing thick, heavy glass.
How long does double glazing last?
When double glazed windows are well maintained, they can last as long as a lifetime. For premium quality and longevity, make sure your windows are A-rated for energy efficiency and that you have high-quality window frames. Our staff will install your windows with years of expertise behind them, ensuring a snug fit that reduces draughts. All of these factors plus proper care and maintenance will lengthen the lifespan of your windows, giving you quality double glazing for decades.
If you begin to notice an increase in your heating needs, or the inner pane of glass is cold to the touch, this may be a sign that you need to upgrade or replace your double glazing.
